Eating Clean & The Fountain of Youth

“The process of aging refers to the decay of an organism’s structure and function, in which molecular and cellular modifications, have various effects at the individual level, over the course of a lifetime. The accumulation of molecular errors that compromise adult stem cell functions occur because of genetic and epigenetic interactions and depends on hereditary, environmental, and stochastic factors.”

So what exactly does it all mean?

Basically it means we are getting older and can't run from it. Simple enough? However what we can do, is help the process along in the healthiest way possible. What we put in our body can have a negative or positive reaction not only internally but externally as well. So yes, what we eat can create extra unwanted wrinkles!

What are foods that promote the aging process? Sorry y'all, alcohol is one of them. To no surprise, on the list is also Artificial sweeteners, Carbohydrates and Sugar. Common denominator? Yes Sugar.

Sugar affects us in so many ways

First of all our skin is made of collagen and elastin. This creates a cushion making protein fibres strong and flexible and giving us the smooth skin we want. Sugar will cause these fibres to become sticky and unable to move like they should, overtime changing the density of our skin to wrinkles. Hence I am sure you have heard... losing elasticity !

Sugar leads to inflammation. Did you know that after you consume sugar, the immune system decreases and actually stays "out of service" for up to 3 hours

What should we be doing to help us maintain a fountain of youth? No not Botox.

Let's talk food.

Leafy greens and colored fruits and veggies are your best friends and should take up half your plate.

Vitamin C, zinc and beta carotene found in oranges and peppers help improve skin and prevent eye disease

Dark leafy greens such as kale, and spinach and broccoli are great sources of Vitamin A,C and K

Red grapes contain resveratrol which is a strong antioxidant that helps with aging prematurely

Eat your whole grains

It's exactly what is sounds like. the Whole grain. Oats, quinoa, brown rice are examples of the grain in its entire form. These are prebiotics and help in promoting a healthy gut. Processed grains will rob us of being our healthiest as well promote aging.

Eat your fatty fish high in Omega 3 fatty acids

As we age, we all know the memory is just not the same so these Omega 3s are important to the brain health and the nervous system. (God knows I need all the brain power possible lol ). It also helps in reducing inflammation, opposite to Omega 6 which can cause inflammation

Eat fermented foods

Examples are greek yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi which will provide healthy bacteria to your gut enhancing digestion and health

Eat your nuts

These are full of cholesterol free protein as well as containing healthy fats and minerals.

Eat your beans and lentils

At least 3-4 times a week. These babies are full of fiber, help digestion, keep you regular, help you feel full longer. Need I say more?

Lastly Exercise!!!

Physical activity will increase the average life span as well as slow down the negative aging process

Eating real whole foods along with physical activity can help reduce the signs of aging

.Keep active at least 30 minutes per day.

Make sure your plate is half full of green leafy veggies and some fruits if you wish, ( I eat my fruits in the morning or close to my workouts so that I burn those sugars as my energy)

We can't prevent the aging process, but we can definitely try to be and look our best !
